Indie pop artist Anna Salman has just released her debut EP, This Summer Won’t Last, on all music streaming platforms. Sad girl pop at its finest, This Summer Won’t Last is a story of catharsis, showcasing Anna’s tender vocals and emotionally raw lyrics about love, loss and life.
“The songs on this EP -- they’re brutally honest, but they’re also incredibly catchy,” says Anna Salman. “I’ve embraced my ‘sad girl’ aura and fused it with a pop sound.” This Summer Won’t Last reveals the ups and downs of relationships, telling a story of hope, heartbreak and, ultimately, healing. “I let my music be a reflection of what’s going on in my life at the time,” she says. “Sometimes, it’s hard to say things out loud or admit certain feelings, like wanting someone to think about you after a breakup. These songs are like hearing someone else voice the feelings you might have trouble sharing yourself.”
Right away, Anna leans into that sad girl aura with songs about introspection and the pain of a fresh heartbreak. “Not the One”, is about the universal experience of realizing something isn’t right for you, no matter how much you force it. It is about saying goodbye to someone after many tries. Anna’s heartbreaking vocals layered with the soft piano melody makes for an emotional listening experience.
The second song, “I’d Like to Think”, which captures the struggle of wanting to be someone’s great love but realizing that, in the end, you can be replaced. But so can they.
“Summer” reflects on the aftermath of a relationship; it represents a season of healing and moving forward, conveying a sense of longing and anticipation of a better future.
Anna then picks up the pace with her signature, catchy pop sound with “Miracle Worker”. The song expresses the feelings of heartbreak and disbelief as one witnesses their ex-partner moving on with someone new. The catchy track sarcastically refers to the new person as a miracle worker. The lyrics also hint at self doubt, questioning if the past relationship held any significance for the ex-lover.
The next track, “Blood Rush” featuring Turaab, is a featured single about the unpredictability of love. It looks back on the decisions made, putting oneself at risk just to prove your love, and feeling as though you’ll never love again after one bad experience.
“High School” captures the emotional ups and downs of navigating love. The lyrics explore the idea of being in love with two people simultaneously and grappling with mixed feelings. The protagonist does not want to settle unless it feels as intense as a high school love.
The final track, “Thanks for Not Loving Me!”, shares the story of walking away from a love that seemed promising but ultimately proved unfulfilling, realizing that time is necessary to gain clarity.
This Summer Won’t Last was produced by Rakae Jamil, Farhan Ali and Abu Baker Zahid and recorded at Red Brick Studios.
